Overview

The Town of Sodus, in north-central Wayne County, includes the villages of Sodus and Sodus Point as well as five hamlets. Agriculture – particularly fruit farming – is the top business here, but tourism along Lake Ontario and Sodus Bay ranks second. Sodus Bay is the largest bay on Lake Ontario. You’ll find orchards of apples, cherries, peaches, and prunes not far from some of the region’s best fishing and boating. History also is abundant, with the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum, Wallington Cobblestone Schoolhouse and the Sunshine Radio Museum.


Essentials

Sodus has plenty of places to eat, from fine dining to hot-dog joints and ice cream parlors. There’s a Super Duper grocery store in town, a Breen’s IGA grocery to the west in Williamson, and a Tops Friendly Market supermarket a bit further west, in Ontario. The Sodus Free Library is at 17 Maple Ave. The Sodus Post Office is at 44 W. Main St., and the Sodus Point Post Office is at 8432 Bay St.



Recreation & Entertainment

Fishing is huge here. Sodus is the mecca for ice fishermen in winter who travel hundreds of miles to fish through the ice. Summertime is even busier, with trout and salmon fishing on Lake Ontario and pike, bass and walleye on the bay. Waterfront activities include summer concerts which are held by the lighthouse.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 104 is the main east-west access throughout the area. Route 14 and Route 88 are the major north-south roadways. Lake Road, which runs along the lakeshore, takes you right into Sodus Point, and Route 14 gets you there from the south. Although the area is rural, Sodus Point can get busy in the summer.



Pros & Cons

This area is great for those who enjoy the outdoors, from wintertime skiing to year-round fishing. Sodus is the more typical village, with shops and businesses, while Sodus Point is a hopping summertime destination for boaters, fishermen and vacationers. Sodus is only about 30 miles from Rochester. Sodus Point can get crowded with summer revelers.
