Overview

Located in the south-central part of Wayne County, the town of Lyons also contains the village of Lyons as well as three hamlets. Lyons sits on the banks of the Erie Canal and is the county seat, and once was known as the “Peppermint Capital of the World” because of extensive essential oil productions. An annual festival, Peppermint Days, is held in Central Park, which has a bandstand and water fountains. The village has an old-fashioned business district, and Lyons has its own police department. The Thruway is just south of town.


Essentials

The Lyons Public Library is at 122 Broad St. The Lyons Post Office is at 1 Pearl St. Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, in neighboring Newark, is the hospital that serves this area. Lyons has several restaurants, pizzerias and fast-food joints, shops and businesses such as Dobbins Drugs, a family pharmacy on William Street. A family hardware store also is on William Street, and a community center is on Manhattan Street. There’s a Big M grocery on Forgham Street; a larger supermarket, Wegmans, is in neighboring Newark.



Recreation & Entertainment

Its location on the Erie Canal makes Lyons a popular place for boating, fishing and other canal-related activities, such as waterfront dining or strolling. The historic Ohmann Theater shows first-run movies. The Newark Pilots baseball team, in neighboring Newark, plays home games in Colburn Park as a member of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 14 runs north and south through the heart of Lyons. State Highway 31 – Forgham Street in the village of Lyons – is the main east-west artery. The Thruway is just south of town. Traffic usually flows smoothly through this area.



Pros & Cons

Lyons has all the attractions associated with the Erie Canal, like a canalside park and canalside restaurants. Lyons has a lot of retail and restaurant selections. Being the county seat, it’s easy to get to government buildings when necessary. It’s also close to Ontario County, which Lyons borders on the south, and to the Thruway. The village can be a bit busier than other locales in this rural county.
